Wild Women: Outdoor Boudoir Victoria BC

“Wild woman are an unexplainable spark of life. They ooze freedom and seek awareness, they belong to nobody but themselves yet give a piece of who they are to everyone they meet.
If you have met one, hold on to her, she'll allow you into her chaos but she'll also show you her magic.”
― Nikki Rowe

I met this incredible woman at an event a while back. I was instantly drawn to her energy and the way she spoke to others. Her laugh carries through a room and I couldn't help but smile whenever she was telling me a story. Fast forward to my outdoor marathon where we so luckily got to work together. As a fellow photographer, she knew the best time to book her spot in order to get that dreamy golden light. Pair that with her amazing confidence and the way she carries herself... and we created unimaginable magic.

I think some of my favourite moments with my clients are when we get very vulnerable with each other... boudoir is inherently intimate and vulnerable, and because of that I think it opens up a lot of conversations that you wouldn't normally have with a stranger you've hired to hangout with for a few hours. But boudoir is... different. This woman shared with me stories of her experiences of inhabiting the world as a plus-size woman. I was so smitten with the way she wanted to do this shoot to show her clients and other plus-sized women that plus size IS sexy. That size doesn't determine worth. You are beautiful no matter what. Just the way you are. We both have a similar mission to empower other women through our work, and it was a blessing to be able to listen to her speak her passion and live her truth through this shoot. She also asked me not to remove any of the "blemishes" in her photos - those things that society tells us to be ashamed of and hide from view. Those are all a part of us and make us human... so these images are her. In all her authentic and phenomenal glory.

I am so lucky that our paths have crossed, because she is a beautiful soul and a very talented artist. Without further ado!

What to Wear to your Boudoir Session

There's a lot of reservations I hear about taking the plunge into your first boudoir session (which is a whole other blog post in itself), but often the first comment I get after someone takes the leap is "but I have no idea what to wear!" That's okay! You can wear basically anything, or lack there-of, to a boudoir shoot... but here are some ideas that you can take with you when you are prepping for your shoot!

First and foremost... wear what makes you feel the sexiest. You could buy the most beautiful piece of lingerie at the store, but if you feel uncomfortable in it then it will translate into your photos. Another thing to keep in mind while  you are compiling your outfits is how they fit you. Things that fit too tightly may make posing more difficult during your shoot. It's best to stick to items that fit you well, and make you feel incredible when you wear them.

It's super fun to go shopping for something new and exciting to wear to your shoot... but often times you can find something already in your existing wardrobe! It doesn't have to be expensive or brand name to be sexy... a regular bra and panties can be incredibly sexy. Or a t-shirt and panties, or just panties, or just a t-shirt... you get my drift.

I know I just said you don't have to buy new lingerie, but it's so much fun. Just make sure when you're going on your shopping spree that you're getting items that fit you properly. Like I said in Point #1, ill-fitting garments can be a girls nemesis. If you don't know what styles to buy, or what will look good for your shoot, just send me a message! I'd love to help if you need a little assistance. And another resource that can be incredibly helpful for your shoot: pinterest! I start secret Pinterest boards with all my ladies before our shoot - it's a great space to look for posing inspiration, and also wardrobe inspiration!

At a loss for a complete outfit? Are you brave enough to bear it all - or rather, bare it all? Implied nude is very popular for boudoir shoots - if it's something within your comfort zone. I'll make sure everything is covered up before each shot to ensure we're getting the "implied" look and nothing more. Of course, if you're feeling confident and brave and want to do some photos that are more risque and feature a nipple - or two *gasp* - then that's okay as well. This is certainly not mandatory and I never want you to feel like nudity is required for a boudoir shoot because that is not the case in the slightest. Heck, if you wanted to wear sweat-pants and a sweater for your boudoir shoot that's fine too!

Not quite comfortable enough to be photographed in your birthday suit, but also can't seem to brainstorm any outfit ideas? I have just the trick for you... my best friend, the classic white sheet. Okay - my best friend isn't actually a white sheet (I'm not that weird, guys), but it's definitely a great prop for a boudoir shoot. It's timeless, classic, and can be incredibly versatile. Plus it goes with everything. Throw on a pair of pumps and wrap yourself in that white-sheet and you've got yourself a seriously kick ass, drool worthy outfit.

And last but not least... Point #6: Something sentimental. This can really be anything. A partners shirt or sweater, maybe a dress that's been handed down to you, or a necklace that holds a special meaning to you. I even did a shoot with a lady who had a scarf she wanted to feature in her photos - and those shots turned out incredible! The sky is the limit for outfit ideas or props. If you're still at a slight loss after reading this post have no worries, I'm here to help. Just shoot me a message and we can brainstorm together!
